I like doing things effectively and efficiently. So I like to read about life hacks and other stuff that could potentially make my life better. Today, I ran across a YouTube video showing all the things that we are doing wrong.
At first, I was like oooohhh. My life is a lie, I am so stupid. Only for three seconds. Then I realized that hey! actually, the product designers messed up. The design is not intuitive enough. Yes, Steve Jobs is right. Things have to intuitive and easy.
So the coke can lid is used as a straw holder? How am I supposed to figure that out from the design. How about the toilet cover? How do I know which is the front or the back? hmm…Tick tack dispenser? What!! Expanding the ketchup cup? Maybe some arrows could have helped?!
Some times, we are easy to blame ourselves for not doing things properly but designers have responsibilities too and they are not helping.
I suggest that we all think about design of things. To start with, I recommend reading the book, Design of Everyday Things. The book is an excellent guide about designing things so it can be used properly and effectively. A must read for all designers and also us, so we can to make things more useful.
PS
I highly recommend reading Emotional Design as well.
