United Arab Emirates appoints the first minister of happiness. I praise UAE to be one of the few nations that cares about happiness along with Bhutan that measures Gross National Happiness. Other nations should follow because GDP and GNP are production concepts, and do not really reflect utility (e.g. joy, happiness). However, given that happiness is quite subjective and difficult to measure, it will be interesting how UAE handles this measurement challenge. After all, one man’s paradise can be another man’s nightmare. Also, it is a bit ironic given UAE’s not so good track record of human rights. Still I applaud UAE’s attempt to maximize utility under severe constraints.

Finally, but not least, as Christians, we know that true joy can only come from our Lord Jesus. So let us pray that the Holy Spirit does it work in UAE, bringing joy and peace to the region.
